We are excited to begin our new venture that we are embarking on as a whole school which will involve teaching our new values i.e. AROHA, Awesome, Respect, Ownership, Honesty and Active Learner.
These values are right at the heart of who we are, driving what we do and how we do it. Here at Otamarakau School we have always prided ourselves on being a caring school with a positive family atmosphere and many visitors to our school have remarked upon this.
Teaching values seeks to make explicit what is happening implicitly. It provides a structure for understanding the way we behave so that everyone is clear about the way we should act and behave at Otamarakau.School.
By introducing these values, we will be helping our children to better understand our range of values such as aroha, awesome, respect, ownership, honesty and active learner, and in doing so, preparing them for the world of the future.
We will focus on Aroha and Awesome in Term 1, Aroha and Respect in Term 2, Aroha and Ownership in Term 3 and Honesty and Active Learner in Term 4.
In school, the children will have an ‘AROHA’ Award Trophy and ‘AROHA’ awards given out at our Friday assemblies. In the classroom, teachers and students will be discussing what these values mean and we will be able to facilitate smaller group discussions.
Children will be thinking and learning about how to put these values into their lives, empowering them to take responsibility and making the right choices to face whatever school and the wider world throws at them.
We hope that this will continue at home and that parents will inform us, of things their child has done or said to demonstrate the values. We will celebrate these successes in assemblies and our school prefects will also be keeping an eye out around school and nominating children for ‘Aroha’ Awards.
