We are an Enviroschool
Otamarakau is an enviromentally aware school and we are enrolled in the Enviroschool awards system. The scheme encourages and supports students on their journey to becoming innovative and motivated young people who instinctively think and act sustainably through a whole school approach to enviromental education. We are one of only two schools in the Bay of Plenty to have won our bronze and then silver awards. Judges commented on the "awesome things the students had created around the school" and were impressed with how "learning was integrated into the classroom curriculum. The judges also commented on the planning and inclusion of Maori perspectives, being some of the best they had seen".
Projects we have completed:
Orchard, fish pond, nature corner, lavender garden, scented garden, butterfly garden, composting, vegetable garden, worm farm, rubbish measuring.
Our Green Machines Team:
Laura, Jasmin, Kiahli, Chelsea, Tarhys, Caitlin, Josh, Ben, Teina, Jade, Messines.
Working together to make a difference to the environment
The development of a Native Tree Area to both create a safe habitat for Native birds and act as an outdoor classroom, beautifying school grounds with sensory and sustainable gardens and reducing, re-using and re-cycling waste are some of the projects the "Green Machine" team (and the students of the school) have completed on their learning journey towards environmental education, biodiversity, sustainability and kaitiakitanga. The "Green Machines" team have already been busy planning, designing and creating their next project and are going for GOLD on the road towards creating a healthy, physically, sustainable school to benefit the whole school and community.
