About Us
We are a small rural primary school well supported by the local community. The school is 10 minutes west of Matata and 20 minutes east of Te Puke, situated in lush countryside with the beach also on our doorstep. It is a beautiful environment in which to educate our children. We have a friendly, hardworking, team of staff, Board of Trustees and parents who all help to make our a school a school to be proud of.
The culture of the school is one of immediate warmth and friendliness. The students are bubbly and focused and we are proud of this purposeful and energetic environment in which boys and girls regard learning as fun.
The school dates back a considerable time. After several applications, a school building consisting of a single classroom was erected in 1916. With roll growth there came a demand for a larger facility and the school was redeveloped in 1940 on a different site.
It now consists of four classrooms, a library, canteen, large gym/multipurpose room, staff room and offices for the principal and administrator. There are beautiful grounds with plenty of space for our children to run about safely, including a tennis court, swimming pool and changing rooms, nature area with a fishpond, orchard and a fantastic adventure playground.
The school is fortunate in being well resourced for all curriculum subjects. There are many resources in the school including colour TVs, DVDs, CD Players, digital projectors and cameras. All students have access to a fully networked computer system with access to the internet. The school is also one of a small number of schools in New Zealand to have the advantage of being equipped with a laptop for each child in the senior room, again, all with connections to the internet. It also has a large interactive whiteboard.
The school is currently organised into three classes, staffed by one part-time and three full-time teachers. The teachers are supported by one full-time and two part-time learning support assistants and an administrator. The school also benefits from the invaluable work of volunteer helpers from the parents and wider community.
Our children work and play well together. They are very fortunate to have a wide range of extra curricular activities to enhance their education. We provide plenty of opportunity for our children to extend their studies beyond the classroom. Regular visits and trips enhance the children's learning, and visitors from the wider community are invited into school to broaden the children's experience.
Our aim is to provide a high quality education recognizing the needs of each individual and valuing the contribution of the wider community. We value each others cultural inheritance and diversity of language and beliefs. We aim to develop the whole child – socially, emotionally, creatively, physically and academically in an environment that is safe, calm and challenging. We have high expectations for all children and work hard to ensure that they meet their full potential by delivering a broad and rich curriculum which provides children with the opportunity to explore enquire and reflect at each stage of their learning journey.
Whilst we acknowledge the crucial role that schools play in a child's development we believe that the most important teachers in a child's life are their parents or caregivers. We therefore actively encourage parents and caregivers to involve themselves in the learning of their child and in the life of our school family. We aim to provide a welcoming atmosphere which encourages parents and caregivers to come and discuss any matters concerning their child's progress and welfare.
